Tiled floors, stone walls, exposed beams … Les Canardeaux combines rustic simplicity with modern conveniences, a perfect base for country walks, horse riding, fishing, wine tasting and visiting chateaux. The 8m x 4 m pool has a security cover and alarm, more than ensuring compliance with new French safety laws. On the terrace, a long table overlooks the pool, and the barbeque is nearby. The cottage is well equipped and comfortable in any season with beautiful oak and pine furniture throughout. In the living area, there are squashy leather chairs and a sofa for lounging by the log fire or satellite TV. Over-sized duvets and hot water bottles are provided in the bedrooms.
I enjoyed furnishing Les Canardeaux, over-spending my budget in local shops and markets. Books, games, DVDs and music CDs are available. The wines of our region are not to be missed and a small selection is stored in the old bread oven that serves as a wine cellar. I am a keen cook and you will find balsamic vinegar, olive oil, and Dijon mustard as standard, as well as an extensive range of herbs and spices. There are plenty of pots and pans in good working order (no loose handles) and generous-sized dishes holding enough for everyone.
The garden stretches out beyond the pool with nothing to block the stunning sunrises and sunsets we experience. You are welcome to pick the grapes, plums, cherries and apples. The entrance is secured with a lockable iron gate and there is room for up to 3 cars to park.
If you want to experience life in the heart of France, stay at Les Canardeaux for a couple of weeks. There are few tourists other than some discerning French who want to keep the Berry a secret. Meet our friendly French neighbours and unwind in the peaceful countryside. The pool is there for your use in summer and the log fire in winter. You can enjoy a quiet day in the sun or explore the many interesting walks, chateaux, golf courses and much more - all within driving distance of the house. Area Details Ambrault is in the Berry, the southern part of the Loire Valley, ideally situated for exploring the whole region. To the north are the grand chateaux of the Loire River, the historic town of Bourges, the fine wines of Sancerre. To the west you will find the Brenne Natural Regional Park with its lakes for fishing and picnics, and the Haute-Touche Nature Reserve where wild animals roam freely; to the east, the picturesque town of La Châtre; to the south the vast lake of Eguzon for water sports. A notable weekly market takes place at St Août (10 minutes’ drive) and you should visit the excellent restaurants such as le St Germain at Sassierges and the Restaurant de la Gare at Ardentes. Interesting walks and a tranquil riverside for fishing are on the doorstep.
The two 18-hole golf courses are about half an hour’s drive away to the west and east, and there is a 9-hole course just up the road. Travel Details Despite the proximity of Chateauroux, the area is very rural and many of the interesting gardens, monuments and sports activities are not served by public transport. However, if you want to visit Chateauroux itself, a free bus runs from the Auchan hypermarket into the centre of town.
We are less than six hours from Calais and about an hour and a half from Limoges airport via a toll-free motorway (A20).
