Protected and secluded, yet not remote, the short sea journey to this island paradise from "mainland" Phuket takes only five or six minutes and is less than half an hour's drive from Phuket's International Airport.

Koh Naka Retreat is located on the island of Koh Naka Yai in the bay of Phang Nga in Southern Thailand, an island, shaped in the form of the Naka (or Naga) a mythical Sea-Serpent from which it takes its name. The origins of Oriental belief in the mythical Naka are lost in history and predate the formal religions of Buddhism and Hinduism which share its symbolysm. This revered water serpent is credited with supporting the god Vishnu on its coils floating on the cosmic ocean whilst the universe was dreamed into existence. The Naka is also the provider of water, the elixir of life, and symbolises a bridge between the world of men and that of the gods.
No more appropriate place could be found to bear the Naka's name than Koh Naka which is located in what is unquestionably one of the world's top locations of outstanding natural beauty where the senses are continuously assaulted by an unspoilt vista of coastal, island and seascape magnificence. If any place on earth could be readily perceived as a bridge to the world of the gods it is here.
The Naka's association withwater and the sea is also most apt as the location of Koh Naka Retreat is perfect for all forms of acquatic activity. Sailing, canoeing, snorkelling, diving in sun-sparkling acquamarine waters, exploring the coral reefs and mangroves or simply sitting on the white sands watching the local fishermen go by in their traditional wooden long-tail boats are just a few of the readily available activities.
The Naka is the most auspicious symbol in Thai culture and religion after the image of Buddha himself. It can be seen throughout Thailand offering its protection by encircling and enshrining Buddha images, defiant and regal at the prow of the King's royal barges and adoning ornate temples and grand houses as roof finials. The presence of this ubiquitous creature is, according to local belief, a prerequisite to security and wellbeing. Koh Naka is fortunate to bear the Naka's name and enjoy its protection.
The crossing from "mainland" Phuket is made from the rustic pier at Ao Po, an unspoilt traditional fishing village in a secluded location off the tourist track on the east coast of Phuket. Whilst the majority of tourists flock to the commercially orientated beaches on Phuket's west coast, the discerning visitor is aware that vastly superior scenery and beaches are to be found off the island's eastern shores. Most of these idyllic locations are accessible only by water which provides them with an exclusivity and tranquility appropriate to their natural beauty. Most visitors to Phuket enjoy, at best, an organised day trip to this region, at Koh Naka Retreat you are based in the heart of this natural paradise and enjoy uninterrupted views of its magnificent scenery.
Arriving at the island a private jetty leads to an infinity edge swimming pool which commands panoramic views of Phang Nga Bay, a magical dreamscape so surreal that it appears as if conceived by the illustrator of a children's story book. From the pool a broad stairway flanked on either side by guardian Nakas leads through a tropical garden to a teak shingle roofed sala constructed over a bubbling watercourse which intruduces the entrance to the main residence. Here a traditional terra cotta relief depicts the gods churning the oceans out of the Naka at the birth of the universe.
The spirit of the house is entwined with the spirit of the Naka. The interior is essentially oriental in character but has been conceived in a manner that is conductive to western living. Here you will not lack creature comforts - a skillful blend of the "necessities" of western living combine with the splendour and design of the Orient to provide and aesthetic and luxurious lifestyle.
Enjoyment of sun and sea together with exotic sightseeing is probably the principle activity of our guests. Whether relaxing on one of the many white sand beaches in the Bay, Swimming in a secluded cove or snorkelling amongst the coral reefs, there is plenty to enjoy. For the more adventurous sailing or diving trips can be arranged. There are many sea-caves in the limestone karsks of Phang Nga Bay and exploring these by canoe or meandering through the mangroves is a favourite activity.
